Environmental Services (ES) is pleased to welcome William Baird as the new Environmental Services Manager. William is replacing Keith Younce who retired in October 2017.
William Baird joins Appalachian State University from Appalachian Regional Healthcare System (ARHS) where he served as Director of Plant Operations and Environmental Services.
“He impressed the hiring committee with his customer-service focused answers,” said Dr. Greg Taylor, Director of Campus Services and Associate Director of the Physical Plant. “He brings a background in cleaning for health, in addition to appearance. This will be of particular importance as our campus population increases. It’s also a wonderful asset as we open our new Leon Levine Health Sciences Building in the fall, as that building will require special cleaning protocols that are more in line with medical offices.”
Mr. Baird has 22 years of facilities management experience at Randolph Hospital and ARHS, where he was responsible for security, maintenance operations and construction in addition to overseeing custodial services. “His depth of leadership experience across a variety of roles in facilities management has made him a very holistic thinker,” said Dr. Taylor. “His experience in private industry will further strengthen a department that has been functioning extremely well.”
Appalachian State’s Environmental Services department is responsible for maintaining cleanliness in academic and support buildings across campus. Roughly 90 staff are employed providing coverage from 6am until midnight, Monday - Friday. During special events such as concerts and sporting events, or emergency events such as floods, staff also return to provide additional support.
Mr. Baird's first day will be February 19, 2018.
